Getting Stronger After 40: Your Practical Starting Point

Strength is about being able to do more of what you love. Start with manageable resistance and build consistency.

Educational information, not a substitute for individual medical advice. Last editorial update: October 2026.

Start with the basics

Try two nonconsecutive strength sessions each week, with modifications for your ability. Include movements for the legs, upper body and core. A beginner might begin with supported sit-to-stands, wall push-ups and light resistance bands.

Make it sustainable

Warm up, use controlled movements and increase gradually. Walking, swimming or cycling can complement strengthening. Balance practice becomes increasingly valuable with age.

Know when to get guidance

If you have new pain, significant joint limitations, dizziness or a complex medical condition, ask a clinician or physical therapist about an appropriate starting plan.
